Aveiro – a city of water and colour

Few cities can claim that their symbols became a boat, salt, and an egg yolk.

Aveiro is called the Portuguese Venice. One look at its canals is enough to understand why. But Aveiro is more than water. It's salt fields, ocean wind, boats with bright illustrations, fishing villages with striped houses, and a dessert made from egg yolk.

Salt

One of the region's main landscapes is the salinas, the salt fields. For centuries, sea salt has been harvested here, letting the sun and wind do most of the work. In summer, the basins turn into a geometric landscape – white, flat, and ruled.

Salt was a strategic commodity long before refrigerators. Thanks to it, Aveiro became an important trading port on the Portuguese coast.

Boats with character

Moliceiros are the symbol of Aveiro. Today they take tourists through the canals, but they used to be working boats: they were used to gather seaweed (moliço) – fertilizer for the local fields.

Over time, the boats started getting decorated. The paintings on their sides are like comics about local life. Each boat has its own character.

The striped houses of Costa Nova

A few kilometres from Aveiro is Costa Nova – a fishing village with striped houses.

At first, they were simple sheds for storing fishing gear. To make them easier to spot from a distance, their façades were painted in bright vertical stripes. Over time, the sheds became houses. The stripes stayed.

Today the Portuguese coast is hard to imagine without these red, blue, green, and yellow façades.

Ovos Moles

Aveiro has its own dessert – ovos moles. It came from the practicality of local nuns. Egg whites were used for starching clothes, and the leftover yolks went into sweets.

A city of colour

Aveiro looks this colourful for a reason. Colour is everywhere here: on the painted boats, on the façades, in the reflections of the water, on the salt fields that change tone by the hour.

This is a place where the sea, salt, and fishing traditions have lived side by side for many generations.
